Learn From the Best: Clear and Effective Project Launch Best Practices
I took a short hiatus from research recently to give birth to my third child. It was the longest I have gone without doing any research in six years. When I came back to work, I was excited but admittedly apprehensive, to dig back into research. Would the first project I managed be the proverbial bike that I would jump back on and ride, or would I have lost my balance?
You can only imagine my joy when I was able to get back on and pedal away. The ease of my transition back to work was largely due to the way we launch projects (new and recurring) at PortMA. Here is a brief outline of how we do that.
Project Launch Best Practices
1. Internal Kick-Off –Upper Management meets with the assigned Research and Field Services Managers to share the information (documents, call notes, politics, etc.) gathered during the business development phase.
2. Methodology Creation – The Research Manager uses the information from the Internal Kick-Off to draft a comprehensive PowerPoint document. The document outlines the research plan. The creation step covers research objectives, logistics for data collection, survey drafts, reporting calendars, and next steps. (I’ll post more details about this step in the future.)
3. Client Kick-Off – After we have reviewed and approved the Methodology internally, we share the newly-created PowerPoint document with the client. Together, we discuss it in detail by phone, web conference, or in person. This stage is based on communication. Each party invested in the project puts questions, concerns, opportunities, and experience on the table in a collaborative process.
There you have it, folks.
The three main steps (Internal Kick-Off, Methodology Creation, and Client Kick-Off) of PortMA’s Project Launch Process streamline the launch of any research initiative in a way that is comprehensive, collaborative, and comfortable. The process is so comfortable, in fact, it helped this researcher jump back on that bike without needing training wheels! The PortMA process consistently helps guide our clients through project launches whether it is their first or fifteenth time.
